was a very pragmatic man, and Dad said thatopinions are like bowel motions. We all have them from time to time. Sometimes some peoplehave more or less. syndrome is not a fictitious disease. In fact,there are many different research papers in mainstream medical journals that have beenwritten about intestinal permeability. It's certainly not fictitious by any means. Whenwe examine the small intestine, there are three sections to the small intestine. Thefirst part, which connects up to the stomach, is called the duodenum. And in America, Ibelieve they call it the duodenum. The duodenum contains quite a lot of intense solar activitythere in terms of digestion. In fact, there's a very small section at the beginning of theduodenum which is about 75 to 90 mils that contains most of the person's immune functionactivity of the whole digestive system. We're

talking about probably three or four inchesof bowel, which is impacted with an incredible amount of immune cells.It's estimated that about 60 percent of a person's immune activity is located in thesmall intestine, and probably three quarters of that is in the first three to four inchesof that section of small intestine. If we examine the small intestine and open it up,it has a surface area of about a tennis court. It's remarkable. You may see some pictureson the internet of what we call villi and microvilli. Villi are basically, I'll drawa picture for you. They're small, funny shaped objects like this. That's a villi and a villilooks a little bit like that. Microvilli are

basically the little projections that runoff the villi. You can see those. If you have a look closer, we've actually got even smallervilli that run off those. The point I'm making here is the surface area is dramatically increasedbecause we've got a huge amount of digestive area that we're looking at.If you look at the microvilli, little fingerlike projections, there's basically one cell layerthat goes around the microvilli. These cellular junctions in a healthy person are very tightand wellcontrolled spaces. Okay, well, I want to welcome everyone. Thisis Nik Hedberg, and tonight we're talking about how to heal leaky gut syndrome. So,let's get this started. I really enjoy doing these webinars, tryingto get some good information out there to everyone. And leaky gut, it's a big issue.Its main connections are going to be with autoimmune diseases and a variety of chronicconditions, which we'll talk about. I'm just going to cover what it is, what causes leakygut, and then some of the things that you can do about it, and then how we manage itin the practice if it's there. The medical term for leaky gut is gastrointestinalhyperpermeability. It is recognized in conventional

medicine, but it's really not going to berecognized by your average . They kind of look down on it or laugh at it, so to speak,but it is definitely something very real. So, let's go ahead and jump right in. Gettingto the symptoms, conditions associated, conditions connected with leaky gut syndrome, and asI mentioned, autoimmune diseases are a big one, like Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves'disease, lupus, Sjögren's, alopecia, rheumatoid arthritis, et cetera. A lot of the symptoms you'll see are fatigue,brain fog. Brain fog is basically inflammation of the brain. Because we don't have pain receptorsin the brain, that's basically how the body

tells us that the brain is inflamed when there'sfogginess. And there's a really strong connection there between the gut and the brain just in general. Weight gain, depression and anxiety. There'sa lot of literature out there connecting chronic inflammation and inflammation in the gut andpsychological issues like depression and anxiety. Different digestive problems, like IrritableBowel Syndrome, Crohn's disease, all sorts of colitis, and then just general symptomslike gas, bloating, cramping, things like that. Food allergies, of course. Arthritis and jointpain, migraine headaches, adrenal gland imbalances,

and then what we call adrenal fatigue, andthen of course asthma and allergies. The gut barrier is called a mucosal barrier,and if there's dysfunction there, there's going to be dysfunction in the other mucosalbarriers like the lungs, for example. So, what is leaky guté What you see here onthe left is what we will call a healthy gut lining. These are what we call villi, they'relike fingers, and that's where all of the absorption occurs in between these gaps. Thisis also where the immune system is. So the gut barrier protects you from a lot of differentthings. It protects you from infections like viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, it protectsyou from absorbing undigested protein, and

so it's this mucosal barrier that's very protective. Now, leaky gut is when that barrier becomesbroken down, and you can see it's all flat here, all of the villi have been compromised.And so when you have leaky gut, you can also have malabsorption. That might be kind ofdifficult to understand for some people, but the intestinal barrier is selective, and whenthe immune system becomes compromised, then it can no longer protect you from the varietyof things that we just talked about. Malabsorption means that the absorptive capacityof the gut barrier is not what it used to be, so people will start to develop nutrientdeficiencies and they won't be able to absorb

protein, carbohydrates and fat. So this isa visual of what we call leaky gut. Now, these are some of the main causes. Whatyou see here in the pink is a diagram of the intestinal barrier. I want to give creditto Aristo Vojdani, he is an immunologist for this slide, and Vojdani has spokenextensively on leaky gut. So these are some of the main things thatwe see up here. Dietary proteins and peptides, so that's going to be like gluten, dairy andother allergies; other foods that are highly allergenic; antibodies, and that's if there'ssome kind of infection in the intestine; drugs and xenobiotics, so environmental chemicals,environmental toxins; prescription medications,

Today I'm going to be answering the question, quot;Is rice healthyéquot; and specifically,quot;What's the difference of white rice versus brown rice, and are either of them healthyéquot;My answer is it really depends on you. In this tutorial, I'm going to share with you thepros and cons of rice as well as go over what I believe to be, by far, the healthiest riceavailable today, that I believe a lot of people could start consuming and seeing great benefitsfrom. There is actually a debate today about whetheryou should be consuming rice or not. Now people in the Paleo diet community preach that everybodyshould be completely grain free and not consume

grains whatsoever. So those people tend tosay rice isn't healthy. Whereas people in the Chinese medicine camp, people that believein traditional Chinese medicine or vegans would think that rice can actually be an incrediblesuper food. I really believe that there is some validity to both, but it really dependson the person, and more important than that, it depends on the preparation, on how therice is prepared, to depending on if it's healthy for you or not. Now let me start off by talking about thetype of rice you should stay away from, and that's refined white rice. Now I'm not talkingabout jasmine rice or basmati rice, which

tend to be white rices. Those have not beenprocessed. But some of that sticky white rice where the fiber has been taken out of, that'sthe sort of rice that most people want to stay away from. Reason is there's a recentmedical study that found those that consume that type of white rice are twice as likelyto develop diabetes compared to those that consumed a whole grain brown rice. Most ofthat white rice today that you'd consume at a Chinese restaurant or fast food place, they'vehad the fiber taken out, they've had the vitamins and minerals taken out. So that type of rice,you want to stay away from. So that's sort of the con there of rice.

The other con against rice or just rice ingeneral is that it contains a compound called phytic acid or phytates. Those are mineralblockers or enzyme inhibitors. That's what causes sort of the density and the hardnessof the rice, and it keeps you from absorbing and digesting all the vitamins and minerals.So that's another negative. Then rice has certain types of protein thatcan be difficult to digest as well. So all of those are big cons that go along with rice. Now let's talk about the positives. The positives,if you get a whole grain brown rice, brown rice or wild rice is high in vitamin B3, knownas niacin. That's really, really important

for your heart health and cardiovascular system.So it's high in B3. It can also be very high in selenium. We know selenium actually supportsthe thyroid as well as the kidneys, and so, again, selenium is a crucial vitamin or mineralwe know that rice has. Also, certain types of rice contain GABA.That's GABA. That's a neurotransmitter that supports the brain. It helps reduce anxiety.It helps improve sleep. It can even support metabolism. So we know, in certain cases,rice can be an incredible super food. Now it really comes down to this, to answerthe question, quot;Is rice healthy, or is brown rice healthy,quot; it has to do with how the riceis prepared. I believe if rice is soaked and

sprouted, that kills off the phytic acid.It then unlocks all the vitamins and minerals. It's now a healthy rice versus most ricesthat aren't germinated or sprouted, aren't as healthy. That's why this is the rice that I personallyconsume at home. I'm not tied to it in any way. It's just what I actually consume. Thisis an organic rice by a company called truRoots, and it's actually a germinated brown rice.That means it's been soaked and sprouted, which kills off phytic acid. You may noticethis. For some people, brown rice or rices tend to be very hard to digest, and that'sbecause the rice hasn't been sprouted. So
